Judge’s Statement:
My judging process hopefully tends to be pretty consistent in approach. Although as you come into some exceptional shows, it does become challenging. I continually look for where and how the artist is making decisions within the works. I look for how deep they pursue questions as they work through the piece – most of the time it is apparent. It defines the quality and depth of the works. I always approach each piece based on where I feel the artist is moving and where their intent is. Is it successful and confident in delivery? How the piece initially impacts the viewer? How the artist is using and exceeding the media? What story or emotion are they delivering? How they apply composition, movement, color, value and light. I feel this applies to all media and styles. In this, it keeps my approach level, keeping me looking at works and keeps me involved in the values of the show and not my personal tastes. I am always excited to view shows in this approach and always find myself growing, learning and energized. Thank you for asking me to participate with your work, and keep painting.
