Biography of Barbara Bunsey, CDA

Barbara began painting over 30years ago, studying with many nationally- and internationally-known Decorative Artists over the years and has developed her own unique style.  She has exhibited her work at many art & craft shows and shops and galleries in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

Barbara has painted Country Tin pieces which were sold at the DeWitt Wallace/Abby Aldrich Folk Art Museum Gift Shop in Colonial Williamsburg.  Many of these are her interpretation of pieces in the Colonial Williamsburg collection.  Barbara also demonstrates her art of Country Tin Painting at the St. George Tucker House in Colonial Williamsburg when she visits each December.  Barbara has painted a reproduction square tea canister which is used in a display for the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation.

Her designs have been featured in many Decorative Art magazines.  Barbara has been named to the Directory of Traditional American Crafts by Early American Life Magazine since 2004.  The artists on this exclusive list represent the best "for their finely wrought skill" in telling wonderful stories with their reproduction artwork.

Barbara was honored to have an ornament selected for the official White House Christmas Tree in 2004 and had the honor of meeting First Lady, Laura Bush, at a reception for the artists whose ornaments were chosen.  In 2005 Barbara painted an ornament to grace the Christmas tree at the Library of Congress.

In 2008 Barbara was one of four artists contacted by the Society of Decorative Painters asked to submit a design to Mrs. Laura Bush.  Barbara's design was chosen and she painted 1,000+ ornaments which President and Mrs. Bush used as gifts for family, friends, and White House staff.  She attended a reception at the White House where she met and was photographed with President and Mrs. Bush.

In 2009 Barbara, along with other members of the Society of Decorative Painters, painted an ornament which was used to decorate the Christmas tree at the Smithsonian.

Barbara attained the Accredited Decorative Painter certification from The Society of Decorative Painters in 2017.  She received the Certified Decorative Artist designation in 2018.

Barbara is a member of the Society of Decorative Painters and Tole Painters of the Western Reserve, where she has held several board positions.  She is also involved in her church community, the Olde Northfield Historic Appreciation Association, and Nordonia Hills Garden Club, where she has also been a board member.

Tuesdays

introduction to Watercolor 01-22

   ASP-381-01-22   /  Tuesday, January 4, 18, 25

Location: WCAC - 110 Westover Avenue
          Times: 12:30-2:30

              Course Fee:
                Members: $105.00
                Non-Members: $120.00
Instructor: Elizabeth Greaf

In three sessions you will learn about watercolor materials, basics of using watercolor, and how to create a simple still life painting. You will end with enough insight to begin to paint simple scenes on your own or feel comfortable in early watercolor classes.  If you've been away from painting for a while, this class can refresh your skills and help you get back into it.

The first session will teach you about watercolor materials. Please wait to get your supplies after this class.  Bring only pencil and paper to the first session (for notes).

Tuesday, January 4, 2021   12:30  – 2:30

Session One   Watercolor materials, how to choose them, how they work

You need to understand how to select paint, paper, and brushes in order to have tools that will let you achieve your goals in painting. You'll learn why these selections are important and be able to make good decisions as you add materials.

Tuesday, January 18, 2021   12:30  – 2:30

Session Two     Watercolor techniques, basic strokes and techniques

When should the paper be dry, when should it be wet?  How can I use my brush to create the image that I want to make?  What other tools can I use to create images?  How do I "paint" white shapes since I don't use white paint in watercolor?  Demonstration and exercises will help you learn about working with watercolor, it's materials, and equipment to achieve your painting goals.

Tuesday, January 25, 2021   12:30  – 2:30

Session Three  Create a simple watercolor still life painting.

You will create a simple painting that will utilize many of the materials and techniques that were discussed in earlier sessions.  This will give you the opportunity to reinforce what you have learned by trying the techniques in an actual painting.  We will work from specific still life items in a setup for your subject.  These items have been chosen to enable you to use a wide variety of the basic techniques.  You will need to bring a small purple eggplant, a nicely striped Gala apple, and a Bartlett pear to class for your subject

Enrollment Deadline & How to Enroll:  Contact Michael Jones, Art Center Manager, by January 2 at (757) 229-4949 or visitwcac@gmail.com to register and make payment.  For questions, contact Judy Leasure, Art Ed Coordinator, at leasure.judy@gmail.com or 757-941-4668.
