Painting into Abstract 07-21

   ASU-362-07-21   /  Saturday, July 10, 17, and 24

Location: Virtual Class Using ZOOM - Link will be sent via E-Mail
            Times: 11:00-1:00

              Course Fee:
                Members: $180.00
                Non-Members: $200.00
Instructor: Ken Wright

About the Instructor:  Ken is a Richmond VA native.  He graduated from Norfolk State University with a BFA in graphics and fine arts.  He was a Virginia Arts Commissioner and served on many arts boards over the years.  For more than forty years, Ken has also been an accomplished abstract painter winning more than 300 awards and honors for his works. His paintings have been featured in prominent collections all over the United States and abroad, including those of two former Presidents, George W. Bush and Barack Obama – both pieces hung in the White House during their terms. Ken has also been teaching abstract painting classes and workshops in the Greater Hampton Roads area for 40 plus years.

About the class: For students at all levels of painting experience, knowledge, and ability. Ken will show you how to recognize and paint from realism into abstract - because abstraction is a close-up view of realism. Over the course of three sessions, you will become more creative in the use of shape and form, and learn that to actually paint "abstract," you must first understand "realism" and how it relates to abstraction.

Supplies to be provided by students:  Several brushes that are suitable for acrylics, including at least one flat brush 2-3 inches wide. Also, canvas, canvas board, and/or heavy or firm paper.  You will also need an assortment of acrylic paints & colors, water container, palette, and paper towels or rags.

Enrollment deadline: July 5, 2021.  Note: A minimum of five students must be enrolled to proceed with this class, so please enroll as soon as possible.

This is a small class for people who have had some experience with watercolor, preferably at least an introductory class that taught them about watercolor materials and the basics of painting in watercolor.  In this class you will be doing paintings from your own photographs.  The instructor will work with the students as a group and individually during the class to help them further develop their skills.  She will help you plan your approach to your painting, give guidance on the drawing that you are starting with, and then advise, demonstrate, etc. on aspects of the painting wherever you may need her help.  When needed, she’ll use a class session for a concentrated lesson on some aspect of drawing/painting.  When she is working with one student, all are welcome to listen and ask questions as these questions offer a learning opportunity to all.   Get your materials list when you enroll.  If you have questions about items on the materials list, contact the instructor for information.  516 383-1137 or artbyeliz@gmail.com.

This class is one in which people who are working to continually improve their painting skills often enroll continuously.  People find not only the help of the instructor valuable but to continually take class with the same group of people creates an excellent support group for your painting endeavors.

How to Enroll:  Contact Janis Wood at  757-220-2217 to register and make payment.  For questions, contact Judy Leasure, Art Ed Coordinator, at leasure.judy@gmail.com or 757-941-4668.

Introduction to Watercolor 007-21

   ASU-363-07-21   /  Tuesday, July 13, 20, and 27

Location: Virtual Class Using ZOOM - Link will be sent via E-Mail
            Times: 12:30-2:30

              Course Fee:
                Members: $105.00
                Non-Members: $120.00
Instructor: Elizabeth Greaf

In three sessions you will learn about watercolor materials, basics of using watercolor, and how to create a simple still life painting. You will end with enough insight to begin to paint simple scenes on your own or feel comfortable in early watercolor classes.  If you've been away from painting for a while, this class can refresh your skills and help you get back into it.

The first session will teach you about watercolor materials. Please wait to get your supplies after this class.  Bring only pencil and paper to the first session (for notes).

Wednesday, July 13, 2021   12:30  – 2:30

Session One   Watercolor materials, how to choose them, how they work

You need to understand how to select paint, paper, and brushes in order to have tools that will let you achieve your goals in painting.  I've provided a simplified materials list and suggested brands and sources of these materials.  Please order them in time to be prepared for this class.  You'll learn why these selections are important and be able to make good decisions as you add materials.

Wednesday, July 20, 2021   12:30  – 2:30

Session Two     Watercolor techniques, basic strokes and techniques

When should the paper be dry, when should it be wet?  How can I use my brush to create the image that I want to make?  What other tools can I use to create images?  How do I "paint" white shapes since I don't use white paint in watercolor?  Demonstration and exercises will help you learn about working with watercolor, it's materials, and equipment to achieve your painting goals.

Wednesday, July 27, 2021   12:30  – 2:30

Session Three  Create a simple watercolor still life painting.

You will create a simple painting that will utilize many of the materials and techniques that were discussed in earlier sessions.  This will give you the opportunity to reinforce what you have learned by trying the techniques in an actual painting.  We will work from specific still life items in a setup for your subject.  These items have been chosen to enable you to use a wide variety of the basic techniques.  You will need to bring a small purple eggplant, a nicely striped Gala apple, and a Bartlett pear to class for your subject
