Instructor: Kristen Dahms

We welcome back Kristen Dahms, an award winning artist and instructor, who has recently moved back to Williamsburg.

In this class, you will explore ideas that inspire you and then learn how to utilize specific techniques to bring your ideas to life.  You will use water-based media, such as watercolor, ink, coffee, patterned paper, colored pencils, ink transfers, markers, acrylic paint and soft pastels in various combinations.

You will experiment with different ways to use these materials to develop vibrant texture in your paintings, and start painting with a foundational stain before building layers of images and patterns with watercolor, ink, and paper.  You will also learn how to emphasize composition while building up multiple layers for a unified piece of art.

Open to all skill levels.

Supplies - please bring the following to class:

  • At least 3 different materials that you feel comfortable using (watercolors, colored pencils, markers, watercolor stamps, pastels, etc.)
  • Photo references of what you want to paint, the more the better.  For example: animals; landscapes - five or more from a favorite place; inspirational - lily pond, including close-ups of lillies, frog, turtle, koi fish, etc.
  • Paper: Kristen works with Arches paper 140lb for watercolor, but you are welcome to work on Canson or arches block.
  • Other materials: watercolor and scrapbook paper, glue, colored pencils, watercolor pencils, oil pastels, acrylic paint, brushes, regular pencils and eraser.
  • If working in acrylic, bring a canvas or canvas board.
